As early as 7:10 in the morning children come to Zinuk Nehenim V’lomdim center, ready to begin their day with exercise before school starts. Research on ADD/ADHD and sensory processing disorders has proven that participation in a regular exercise regimen is the most effective way to improve concentration, reduce distractibility and impulsivity and control emotional regulation. Although many people are aware of this, a child’s home dynamics often makes it very difficult to provide the consistent exercise children need.
At Zinuk, the children are divided into small groups based on gender, age and level of ability. The children spend half an hour five mornings a week in the company of their friends performing exercises led by certified instructors who specialize in these areas. The exercises are all based on neurological research showing exactly which types of exercises stimulate the brain.
The results have been incredible. Teachers have commented that children who were previously jumping out of their seats now have more focus and control over their behaviors and actions. This program is not limited to helping children with their school work, it also assists in their interpersonal relationships. The children enjoy exercising with their friends and the common experience is bonding. Morning exercise helps regulate the child’s sensory system. Once a child’s sense’s are regulated the world feels like a better, more manageable place. The result is that these children are more prepared to learn in the classroom and beyond.
